Weirdos like the Channel O
on-air personality, Denrele Edun and Lady Gaga have a raging passion
for fashion. For these ones, fashion is a mode of self-expression and
means more to them than religion.
While some people expect Denrele
to outgrow his eccentricity soon, he laughs at them and says, “They are
just being conservative. Such personal talks used to hurt a lot when I
first started out. Now, I say to such people, ‘I have one life to live. I
make many heads turn and I make the news. This is my life, what about
you?’”
Unknown to his critics,
Denrele’s strange dress sense has its origin in his days as a model. The
first person he ever modelled for was the talented Kesse Jabari. “After
I developed my own fashion style, I have worn everything from tattered
jeans to bullets, keys, padlocks, pins to safety door bolts, everything.
My looks are serious but playful. I cross the line between feminine and
masculine in my outlook,” he says.
Between Denrele and Lady Gaga,
it is difficult to tell who commands more attention than the other. But
he smiles and says, “I have been on the scene before Lady Gaga. If I am
in her environment or have her team of wardrobe specialists or
resources, she would probably look up to me as somebody that is two
times as crazy and weird as she is.”
The maverick TV presenter boasts
a prized possession: a pair of 10-inch platform shoes that he swears
are beyond Lady Gaga’s reach. “Nobody can wear these shoes, not even
Lady Gaga. I know she has a pair of nine-inch high-heeled shoes, but the
day she wore them, she fell flat on her face at the airport. Quote me.
My shoes are 10 inches high. I have rocked everywhere with them.”
