Nigerian Army Recruitment

1.    Applications are invited from eligible Nigerians for commission into the Nigerian Army (NA) as Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) officers. The DSSC is open to both civilians and serving military personnel. However, only serving military personnel sponsored by any of the Services of the Nigerian Armed Forces to civil institutions shall be considered.

CORPS AND SERVICES
2.    Applications  should be into any of the following Corps and Services of the NA:
    a.    Nigerian  Army  Corps of  Supply and Transport.    Applicants must possess a minimum of Bsc (Second Class Lower) degree or HND (Lower Credit) in Hotel and Catering Management.

    b.    Nigerian Army Medical Corps.
        (1)    General Duty Medical/Dental Officers.     Applicants must possess MBBS/BDS or equivalent with not more than 5 years post  qualification experience and must be fully registered with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

B’Haram: Army begins mass recruitment

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday announced the commencement of recruitment into the service.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen Olajide Laleye, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday that the exercise, which started with online registration for interested applicants would come to an end on June 21, 2014.

Laleye advised that only those who would be willing to fight in the North-East should volunteer for the recruitment.

Nigeria’s Special Forces from the Army’s 7th Division have sighted and narrowed the search for the more than 250 abducted Chibok schoolgirls to three camps operated by the extremist Boko Haram sect north of Kukawa at the western corridors of the Lake Chad, senior military and administration officials have said.

“It has been a most difficult but heroic breakthrough,” one senior military official said in Abuja.

Man exposes girlfriend as fake soldier

The 323 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, Ondo State, has arrested a woman, Angela Omieh, for posing as a soldier.

Sets of military uniform, police extract and a sworn affidavit for loss of her military identity card were said to have been found with her.

The Public Relations Officer of the brigade, Captain Ademola Adegoke, said Omieh was arrested following a report by her boyfriend.

According to him, Omieh, who resides in Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was discovered to be in possession of two pairs of camouflage, camouflage T-shirt and short, one pair of desert boot, one jungle hat and three handsets.

He said the suspect had been parading herself as a soldier attached to the 149 Battalion, but deployed to Joint Task Force, Warri for duty.

Security Agencies Seek Road Users’ Understanding Over Abuja Traffic Gridlock

The Ministry of Defence in Nigeria says the traffic gridlock on Nyanya-Abuja highway experienced by road users is in the overall best interest of the public and necessitated by the emerging security threats.
After a bomb attack last week Monday at Nyanya Motor Park, about 16 kilometres to Abuja, the Federal Capital territory was put on red alert, resulting in the check of vehicles coming into the city from that direction.

ABUJA — The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, yesterday, said its investigations revealed that eight persons that were killed by a joint team of the Nigerian Army and operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, at an uncompleted building situated at the Apo District of the Federal Capital Territory on September 20, 2013, were not members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect as was alleged by security agencies.
In a report it released yesterday, the commission, which had earlier conducted a public hearing on the matter, said there was no shred of evidence to show that the deceased victims belonged to the dreaded Jama’atu ahlus sunnah lid da’awati wal jihad, also known as Boko Haram.

Scores killed as soldiers attack Fulani herdsmen in Nasarawa

Scores of people were on Thursday killed in a Fulani settlement near Keana, in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State in a gun duel between soldiers and suspected Fulani cattle breeders.
Many were also said to have been wounded during the incident which occurred barely 24 hours after the military deployed troops in Benue and Nasarawa states to curtail the rising attacks on communities by cattle rustlers.
It was learnt that the soldiers allegedly attacked the herdsmen at a funeral.

Army kills 11 B’Haram members, arrests 31

The Special Forces have arrested 31 fighters of the Boko Haram Sect who were attempting to flee the country through Taraba State and Gumti in Adamawa State into Cameroon.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in an electronic mail on Thursday that one of those arrested was a mercenary claiming to be a citizen of Chad and Burkinafaso.

Olukolade also said that 11 insurgents were also killed during shootouts with troops in the  border communities.

He said that the terrorists who were involved in the encounter with the Special Forces were trapped and were forced out of their hideout by hunger.

‘Why Minimah became army chief’

Indications emerged on Friday that President’s choice of General Kenneth Minimah, as the new Chief of Army Staff may have been informed by the need to intensify the campaign against the insurgency in the north-eastern part of the country.

Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH showed that Minimah belonged to fighting corp of the army as an infantry general.

His predecessor, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, belonged to the engineering corp.

Boko Haram: Bomb maker arrested

The Nigerian Joint Task Force, JTF, fighting terrorists in northern part of the country said it has apprehended a Boko Haram chieftain, who doubles as the group's bomb maker in Kazaure, Jigawa state, north-western Nigeria.
Captain Ikedichi Iweha, spokesman of 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, headquartered in Kano, said six people were rescued during a dawn raid that led to the arrest of the yet to be identified terrorist.
Those rescued were three women and three toddlers, suspected to be family members of the man who intelligence gathering revealed has been in the business of aiding and abating terrorist activities in the North.

Security: Army moves to retire 40 Generals

ABUJA—In its bid to reposition the Nigerian Army for expected operational challenges in the coming year and beyond, the Nigerian Army Council has commenced issuing terminal letters to over 40 generals preparatory to their leaving the force.

The letters from the Military Secretary’s office said the letters are being issued to officers of the rank of colonel, brigadiers-general and majors-general and the letters take effect from January 2014. Many of the officers are to commence their retirement with immediate effect from this December.
Among the generals who have so far received the letters were some Principal Staff Officers at Army and Defence headquarters, Commandants of Tri-service institutions, Corps Commanders as well as those of Army-owned training institutions. Officers from TRADOC, Divisions and Corps headquarters are also involved.

Army kills 63 terrorists in Borno, Lake Chad area

ABUJA— Defence headquarters disclosed, yesterday, that the Special Force of the Nigerian Army killed 56 Boko Haram terrorists that have been making life unbearable for citizens living in the North-East of Nigeria, while seven other terrorists were killed in the Lake Chad islands.

According to a statement by Major-General Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information, the operations were carried out at Alafa in Borno State and the Lake Chad islands, respectively.
