The NDLEA spokesman, Michelle Ofoyeju, said the suspect was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos during the outward screening of passengers on board. A 51-year-old-man, Odeyemi Ayodeji, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for attempting to smuggle a 3.870 kilogramme of methamphetamine to Nairobi, Kenya.
Methamphetamine (also known as Ice or Meth) is a solid, sour and powdery substance which could be dissolved in water or alcohol.
The Commander of the agency at the Lagos Airport, Mr Hamza Umar, who confirmed the arrest to PUNCH Metro, added that the drug was found inside Odeyemi’s luggage.
He said, “Odeyemi Ayodeji was arrested with 3.870kg of methamphetamine. The drug was packed in white transparent polythene and hidden inside his bag. The bag also contained soup ingredients like pepper, melon and crayfish.”
But Odeyemi said the need to cater for his family and settle his debts forced him to embark on the smuggling mission.
He said he would have made a profit of $15,000 (N2.5m) which he could use to set up a business.
The suspect, said, “I could not sleep because of debts. As a result of my condition, one of my wives has gone to live with her parents. I would have made a profit of $15,000 from selling the drug in Nairobi. I intended paying my debt and starting a business with the profit. Kindly help me, I am married to two wives with three children.”
Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, however, called for stiffer punishment to deter people from drug trafficking drugs.
He said, “Getting money from drug trafficking is criminal and must be discouraged. We need stiffer punishment to deter people from it. The pain of spending 15 years in prison will prevent more people from getting involved in drug smuggling.”
He added that the suspect would soon be charged to court.
