FEMALE politicians, civil society groups, friends and family members gathered yesterday at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to honour an icon of women's rights, lawyer and founder of the Women's Consortium of Nigeria (WOCON), Olabisi Olateru-Olagbegi.
Those present at the occasion honoured the late human rights activist by wearing navy blue Adire attire, which was the signature outfit of the late Olateru-Olagbegi.
In her remarks, Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Cecilia Ezeilo, described Olabisi as a true African woman, saying, "the women movement has lost one of her own. Aunty Bisi was a great woman, an excellent facilitator. She was very passionate about issues that concern women, a feminist, a woman of valour, a nationalist, a hero, a leader, we are blessed to have her."
Former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Reuben Abati, in his speech said there is reward in service especially one dedicated to the common good of the society. "When people die, nobody remembers them for the number of cars they have or houses, but they are remembered for the manner with which they have touched other lives positively and so this should be for us an opportunity of self-evaluation."
President, Women Arise for Change, Joe Okei-Odumakin said, "it is already 45 days we lost one of the most principled defender of human rights. She was a brain box, very articulate and believes in living her life for the defenceless and abused. The only befitting memorial we owe her is to uphold those values and virtues."
