President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has welcomed the designation of Port Harcourt as the UNESCO World Book Capital 2014.
Receiving members of the Board of Trustees of the Rainbow Book Club at State House, Thursday, the President said this 'honour will form part of the activities for the celebration of Nigeria's Centenary next year'.
He said the activities of the Rainbow Book Club of Port Harcourt were in harmony with his initiative, 'Bring Back the Book Campaign' launched in 2010 to stimulate the younger generation of Nigerians to read books.
President Jonathan pledged government's assistance to the Club's activities, especially to help attract global attention to the events marking the UNESCO World Book Capital 2014 in Port Harcourt.
Earlier, Mrs. Koko Kalango, chairperson of the Rainbow Book Club, told the President that cities including Moscow, Oxford, and Lyon bid for the UNESCO World Book Capital 2014, but Port Harcourt was selected, describing this as 'an opportunity to put Nigeria on the global map'.
Mrs. Kalango said the Club needs the support of government to be able to positively prosecute the programmes of the UNESCO World Book Capital.
She said the Club's activities included a campaign titled, 'Get Nigeria Reading Campaign', similar to the President's 'Bring Back the Book Campaign'.
Mrs. Kalango presented a copy of the book, 'Nigerian Literature: A Coat of Many Colours', to the President, and thanked him for writing the Foreword, adding that it would be launched on April 23, 2013, World Book Day.
The Rainbow Book Club bestowed its honourary membership on President Jonathan.

STRONGER NIGERIA - SOUTH AFRICA TIES WILL BENEFIT AFRICA – PRESIDENT JONATHAN
President Jonathan was speaking to the outgoing South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Kingsley Mamabolo, during a farewell audience at State House, Wednesday.
'We worked together successfully to eradicate apartheid and we should continue to build on our past relationship for the benefit of Africa', he stated.
The President agreed with Mr. Mamabolo that the Nigeria – South Africa Bi-National Commission had provided a very good platform to further strengthen relations for the mutual benefit of the two nations and Africa.
He congratulated the outgoing High Commissioner on his appointment as South Africa's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and urged him to work closely with the Nigerian Permanent Representative in New York for the benefit of both countries and Africa.
Earlier, Mr. Kingsley Mamabolo commended President Jonathan for creating a conducive environment for foreign missions to operate successfully in Nigeria.
'We have been inspired by your commitment to strengthen relations with South Africa through the Bi-National Commission, and the conducive environment you created for us to operate in', he said.
Mr. Mamabolo thanked President Jonathan for the cooperation he enjoyed during his tenure in Nigeria.

Geneva, 22 January 2013 - H.E. Dr. Goodluck E. Jonathan, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria today hosted the first meeting of Nigeria's new Eminent Persons Group (EPG). The newly formed group of influential global leaders will advise the President on actions to help achieve Nigeria's Agricultural Transformation Agenda as well as provide a global platform for encouraging investment in Nigeria's growing agricultural sector.Members of the EMG include Bill Gates, co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Kofi A. Annan, Chair of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), Dr. Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Kanayo Nwanze, President of the International Fund for Agriculture Development and Mohammed Abu-Ghazaleh Chairman and CEO of Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. Joining the EPG at the Geneva meeting were the Honorable Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Akinwumi Adesina, CON, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and other chief executive officers of global multinational and Nigerian corporations.
"Nigeria is undergoing rapid changes in its agriculture sector. We have stopped viewing agriculture as a development program, but now as a business that can assure food security, create wealth and generate jobs. Private sector investments are rising significantly as a result of our bold policy reform," said President Goodluck. "I am confident that with the support of the private sector and the donor community, Nigeria's agriculture will further drive economic growth and unlock new opportunities for millions of our farmers and agribusinesses."
Nigeria's Agricultural Transformation Action Plan (ATAP), introduced last year by the Honourable Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, provides a com
prehensive government strategy to reduce the cost of food imports, diversify the economy and develop rural areas of the country. The goal is to industrialize the sector making it more productive, efficient and competitive. Over the next five years, it is anticipated the plan will add 20 million tons of food to domestic supply and create 3.5 million jobs along the agricultural value chains.
"We ended decades of corruption in the fertilizer and seed sectors of Nigeria within just three months of this administration. We also introduced the use of electronic wallets to deliver subsidized inputs directly to farmers through their cell phones, reaching 1.2 million farmers. Our policy reforms and incentives have attracted eight billion dollars of private sector investment commitments so far," said Adesina. "Based on our success, Nigeria's agricultural transformation agenda will be a model for the rest of Africa to address food security and drive economic growth."
"What Nigeria is doing in its agriculture sector is an example for the rest of Africa. That is why the African Development Bank is strongly supporting this agricultural transformation agenda. About the Agricultural Transformation AgendaTransforming the agricultural sector is key to Nigeria's strategy for growth and is driven under the new Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA). Introduced last year by the Honorable Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the ATA is the largest ever government-enabled private sector-led effort to grow agriculture in Nigeria. This comprehensive effort aims to increase domestic food production, reduce dependence on food imports and expand value addition to locally produced agricultural products. Through de-regulation, attractive financing, concentrated infrastructure investments, and competitive policies, the sector will be more productive, efficient and competitive. TRANSFORMATION OF AGRICULTURE TO CREATE 3.5 MILLION NEW JOBS BY 2015 – PRESIDENT JONATHAN
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan said Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland that his Administration has embarked on bold policy and institutional reforms aimed at adding 20 million metric ones of food to domestic supply and creating at least 3.5 million new jobs in agriculture and allied industries by 2015.
Speaking at the formal opening of a meeting with members of the Eminent Persons Group on the Transformation of Nigeria's Agricultural Sector, President Jonathan said that the present administration's objective was to build on Nigeria's "tremendous natural resources", reverse the decline in the agricultural sector's productivity which followed the discovery of oil, establish domestic self-sufficiency in food and make the country "a major net exporter of food".
"Such a shift will not only reduce the billions of dollars we spend importing basic food items, but will also create millions of jobs, especially for our youth. This shift will also drive agricultural industrialization as more agro-allied enterprises are established to process and add value to local foods for domestic and international markets," the President said.
He told the gathering that his Administration was wholly committed to a government-enabled, private sector driven transformation of the nation's agricultural sector.
"Government will continue to support public-private sector partnerships that reduce the costs of doing business in Nigeria especially by providing critical infrastructure such as power, water and roads. This is why my Government is developing Staple Crop Processing Zones as a new framework for attracting the private sector into areas of high food production, to process, and add value to all commodities produced in Nigeria.
"We also recognise the need to accelerate investments in research and development, and take advantage of modern technologies, including bio-technology and ICT technologies that will expand possibilities for our farmers," President Jonathan said.
The President declared that the initiative to transform Nigeria's agricultural sector through the private sector is already paying off with new private sector investments worth about Eight Billion U.S. Dollars now committed to agriculture.
Thanking members of the Eminent Persons Group for their support, President Jonathan said that their contributions to the positive transformation of Nigeria's agricultural sector will not only help to achieve food security for the nation, but will also help to enhance national security by helping to create more new jobs to take millions of unemployed youth off the streets and into productive employment.

Members of the Group include Mr. Bill Gates, the former Secretary-General
of the United Nations, Dr. Kofi Annan, the President of the International
Fund for Agricultural Development, Dr. Kanayo Nwanze, the President of the Africa Development Bank, Mr. Donald Kaberuka and the Chairman of the Del Monte Produce Group, Mr. Mohammed Abu-Ghazaleh.
The President will at a special session of the annual meeting of the
world's leading businessmen and industrialists at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday also promote new incentives for investment in
Nigeria's agricultural sector targeted at attracting greater international support for the establishment of a much more successful and profitable
agro-allied industry in the country.
The session will also focus on ongoing policy and institutional reforms in the sector, the establishments of staple crop processing zones and medium to long term financing options for agriculture in Nigeria.

Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, the Minister of Trade
and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga and the Governor of the Central Bank of
Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is scheduled to host a private
session with representatives of leading multinational companies under the
auspices of the Business Interactive Group on Nigeria.
The President will also seize the opportunity of his participation in
special sessions of the World Economic Forum titled "De-Risking Africa" and
"Africa's Promise" to draw fresh global attention to the great
opportunities which ongoing reforms and deregulation, privatisation and
commercialisation of former public sector monopolies have opened up for
willing investors in key sectors of the Nigerian economy such as oil and
gas, power supply, communications, transportation and agriculture.
President Jonathan will meet privately with the Prime Ministers of the
Netherlands and Norway, the President of Costa Rica and the Chief Executive
Officers of the Huawei Technologies Company, Total and Coca-Cola Worldwide
on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.
He is expected to leave Switzerland on Friday for the African Union Summit
of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa where he will confer with
other African leaders on action to resolve the boundary dispute between
Sudan and South Sudan as well as fresh and ongoing initiatives to restore
peace, security, political stability and normalcy to Mali, Guinea-Bissau,
Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jonathan Pays Surprise Visit To Lagos Police College
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday paid a surprise visit to the Nigeria Police College in Ikeja, Lagos on his way to Cote d' Ivoire for an ECOWAS meeting.
Sources said even his top aides had no prior inkling of the unscheduled stop over.
The visit, said to be "a fact finding inspection" by a police source, was intended to enable the President address certain issues hampering the qualitative training of policemen.
But many observes believe it was in reaction to a recently documentary on the dilapidated state of infrastructure and challenges facing trainees in the foremost Police training institution in the country by Channels television.
Not even the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Umar Manko, or the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Alhaji Mamman Tsafe, was notified of the visit.
But presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, told The Guardian that the visit was a surprise and brief.
"We just left the college. It was a surprise visit. We are on our way to Cote d' Ivoire," he explained.
A source at the College told The Guardian that they had never seen such a surprise visit by a sitting President since the institution was established.
According to the source: "It was like a dream the way the President came in with his entourage.
"He did not spend time at all; he just moved round the school briefly and left."

President Goodluck Jonathan has written to congratulate Chief Chukwumeka Anyaoku as he marks his 80th birthday anniversary tomorrow, Friday, January 18, 2013.
In the letter, President Jonathan praised the elder statesman and former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth for his tireless service to the nation.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN FOR EXTRA-ORDINARY MEETING OF ECOWAS LEADERS IN ABIDJAN
President Goodluck Jonathan will travel to Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire tomorrow for an Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government ahead of the full deployment of the community's troops to Mali.
President Jonathan will be accompanied to the meeting by the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada and the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Sa'ad Ibrahim.
The meeting is also expected to discuss the situation in Guinea-Bissau.
President Jonathan is due back in Abuja on Saturday.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN CALLS FOR A MORE ROBUST GLOBAL RESPONSE TO TERRORISM
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Thursday in Abuja called for a more robust global response to the scourge of terrorism.
Speaking after reviewing recent terrorism-related events in Algeria and Northern Mali with the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Andrew John Pocock, President Jonathan said that the whole world clearly needed to unite and do much more than is presently being done to contain terrorism with its very negative impact on global peace and security.
President Jonathan condemned yesterday's kidnapping of British, French and other foreign workers at a gas facility in Eastern Algeria by terrorists who claimed to be responding to France's intervention in Mali, saying that Nigeria will continue to work hard with its partners in the international community to ensure that terrorism is vigorously rolled back across the world.
The President told Mr. Pocock that in furtherance of Nigeria's commitment to the war against terrorism in West Africa, Nigerian troops were currently deploying to Mali to join up with the multinational force assembling there to restore Northern Mali to the control of the Malian Government.
Welcoming the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria, President Jonathan assured him that he will have the full support and cooperation of the Federal Government in his endeavour to further strengthen the existing cordial relations between Nigeria and Great Britain.
President Jonathan had earlier received the letters of credence of the first Ambassador of South Sudan to Nigeria, Mr. Parmena Mankuet Mangar.
He assured Mr. Mangar that Nigeria will remain a strong advocate for peace between South Sudan and Sudan, and that the Federal Government will also give all possible developmental assistance to the new country.

PRESIDENT JONATHAN REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO REFORMS, CALLS FOR CONTINUED WORLD BANK SUPPORT
President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday in Abuja reaffirmed his Administration's commitment to the implementation of all reforms considered necessary for accelerated economic growth, job creation and poverty alleviation in Nigeria.
Speaking at an audience with the World Bank's Vice President for Africa, Mr. Mouktar Diop, President Jonathan said that although it was not easy to undertake certain reforms in an intensely political environment, the Federal Government under his leadership will continue to evolve and implement policies that will assure sustainable development and the long-term well-being of the nation.
Acknowledging Mr. Diop's commendation of his Administration's stewardship of the Nigerian economy, the President said that with the continued support of the World Bank, other international institutions and investors the Federal Government will achieve an even higher growth rate for the national economy.
"We will continue to do our best. We would have had more robust growth by now but for the global economic recession. With your continued support, we will certainly achieve more," he told Mr. Diop.
The President said that Nigeria will particularly welcome more support for the World Bank for the concluding stages of its power sector reforms especially for the speedy resolution of labour issues and other matters related to the ongoing privatization of the sector.
Mr. Diop had praised ongoing reforms in Nigeria and the management of the Nigerian economy by the Jonathan Administration which he said had made Nigeria one of the fastest growing emerging economies in the world in spite of the current global recession.
The World Bank Vice President also disclosed that by the World Bank's own criteria and assessment, the level of poverty in Nigeria had actually declined from 48 per cent to 46 per cent under President Jonathan's leadership.
Mr. Diop assured President Jonathan that the World Bank will "use all instruments available to it" to support Nigeria's power sector reforms, saying that he had a clear brief from the bank's President to give all necessary support for the reforms.

Reuben Abati saves Dr Kayode Fayemi's Aide from detention
Abati being a kind gentleman requested for the details of the detained man and promised to help.
It later turned out that Mr Odewale Eggheader a Special Assistant to Ekiti Governor; with a colleague Jimoh Ibrahim were 'taking photos around Katsina'.

After contacting Katsina Police command, Abati sent updates and assured everyone that Odewale and Ibrahim will be released soon:
"FYI Got info earlier eggheader Odewale arrested in Katsina. Odewale actually PA/SSA to Ekiti Governor. Was takn photos around Katsina."
"FYI: Eggheader Odewale was arrested along with Jimoh Ibrahim, ID card Logistics and Protocol, Ado Ekiti. Both claim research mission."
"FYI: Spoke with Odewale and followed the process thru at all levels. Both men'll be released shortly. Note that d police also have a duty."
Meanwhile, as everyone awaits the release of the men, there were concerns by Nigerians why a law abiding citizen cannot take photos anywhere in his own country. Many of the questions directed at the President's spokesman were not properly presented.
President Jonathan's spokesman explained that after speaking with police in Katsina and the accosted men, it turned out that "Eggheader Odewale and Ibrahim were taking pictures of locations which have implications for national security & foreign relations"
After the intervention of Abati, Odewale Eggheader and his colleague Jimoh Ibrahim has since been released from custody. This is not the first time Abati will play a good samaritan role to people in need of help. Kudos.

France sends troops to Mali
However, Mr Hollande said France would only act under UN authorisation.
He was responding to a plea by Malian President Dioncounda Traore for help to counter a renewed rebel offensive.
Earlier, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called for the rapid deployment of an African-led international force to Mali.
The Malian army said yesterday that French troops, as well as soldiers from Nigeria and Senegal, were already in Mali. However, speaking at a press conference, the army official refused to give details of their activities.
BBC reported that Residents of the strategic central town of Mopti told the BBC they had seen French troops helping Malian forces prepare for a counter-offensive against the Islamists in nearby Konna.
France was previously believed to have about 100 elite troops in the region. It also has a military base in Chad.
Armed groups, some linked to al-Qaeda, took control of northern Mali in April 2012. They have sought to enforce an extreme interpretation of Islamic law.
Western nations are concerned that Malis north could become a base for terrorists to plan and launch international attacks.
France is signalling pretty unambiguously that it is prepared to step into the Malian conflict. President Hollande said any military action would take place within the framework of the UN, but officials at the Elysee have made clear that, in Frances view, existing UN resolutions already provide sufficient legal cover.
Media reports in Paris say a detachment of French troops is already on the ground at the airport in Mopti, about 70km (43 miles) south of the frontline. It is not clear what their role is - perhaps to assess the situation ahead of a possible intervention.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan said Friday in Abuja that African Heads of State and Government must take the lead and do all within their powers to peacefully resolve the lingering boundary dispute between Sudan and South Sudan.
Speaking after receiving a briefing on latest developments in the dispute over the Abyei region from Mr. Nafie Ali Nafie, a Special Envoy of President Omar El-Bashir of Sudan, President Jonathan pledged that Nigeria will initiate further talks on a peaceful settlement of the dispute at the next summit of the African Union scheduled to hold in Addis Ababa this month.
The President said that African leaders must unite in support of the peaceful and amicable resolution of the dispute over Abyei and all other boundary issues that resulted from the separation of South Sudan from Sudan because they will continue to cause problems between the two countries if left unresolved.
"It is an African problem and African leaders must take the lead in resolving it. We cannot wait for others to come and do it for us," President Jonathan said.
Mr. Nafie assured President Jonathan of President El-Bashir's commitment to the peaceful demarcation of the boundaries between Sudan and South Sudan, and the establishment of friendly relations between both countries.

Speaking after receiving a briefing on latest developments in the dispute over the Abyei region from Mr. Nafie Ali Nafie, a Special Envoy of President Omar El-Bashir of Sudan, President Jonathan pledged that Nigeria will initiate further talks on a peaceful settlement of the dispute at the next summit of the African Union scheduled to hold in Addis Ababa this month.
